Trip Description top of page

This three day Glacier Trek is an outstanding trip boasting vistas which are unrivaled in North America.  We will stay in Alpine Club of Canada Huts along the way.  Over the course of the trip we will have the option of climbing a glaciated peak or two (over 3000 meters) in conjunction with the traverse.  It also provides the beginner an exciting way to be introduced to the sport of mountaineering.  The trip travels over heavily glaciated terrain everyday so it requires the group to be roped up the entire time we travel on the ice.

An important distinction to keep in mind is that this trip is conducted by me entirely from start to finish.  In other words you will deal with me personally throughout the booking process.  I will field any questions by email or phone and I will deal with any/all logistics associated with the trip.  I am an Internationally Certified Mountain Guide and I will handle this and all trips personally and professionally.

When booking a trip - ask about the guide's certification level for your trip.  It is absolutely imperative that the guide leading your trip is certified, experienced and is a local.  Permits and Insurance are required as well.  All IGB Guides are insured and have all permits that are required for guiding legitimately in Canada's Mountain National and Provincial Parks.

I am also a member in good standing with my Association of Canadian Mountain Guides as well as being an active Professional Member of the Canadian Avalanche Association.

Day 1: Bow Lake (1800 meters) to Bow Hut (2350 meters)

Distance: 6 km's or 3.7 miles or roughly 3.5 to 5 hours to hike up to the Hut

Elevation Gain: 550 meters

The trail is well established as it works its way on the south side of Bow Lake towards the creek that is breached by a giant limestone boulder! Very exciting and spectacular canyon to cross.  The trail continues up into treeline and then eventually we arrive in an alpine cirque where the bulk of the elevation is surmounted on the last moraine before the Bow Hut at 2350 meters.

At the hut we get settled and then conduct a skills briefing. Everything you will need to know to travel safely on the glacier will be demonstrated and we will have the opportunity to practice the basics.  You will learn about glacial geomorphology and why and how to travel safely on a glacier amongst crevasses and avoiding glacial features known as 'serac fields.'  I am quite familiar with these surroundings and I will be an ambassador to this beautifully glaciated alpine paradise.

Day 2: Bow Hut (2350 meters) to Peyto Hut (2500 meters)

Elevation Gain & Loss: 150 meters (or more depending on whether we climb a peak or not)

This part of the trip is amazing.  We hike up toward the Wapta Icefield, stop and 'rope up,' then begin the traverse to the Peyto Hut possibly climbing peaks along the way such as Mt. Thompson, Mt. Rhonda, Mt. Gordon or St. Nicholas / Mt. Olive.  Bear in mind many of these peaks are over 3000 meters or about 10 000 feet!

Day 3: Peyto Hut (2500 meters) to Bow Summit Parking Lot (2000 meters)

Elevation Loss: 500 meters

Distance: 7.5 km's or 4.6 miles

We will start on the glacier just below the hut and walk down the glacier toward the big moraine that we hike up for a few hundred meters and then descend to Peyto Lake.  At the southeast corner of Peyto Lake, we have one last climb up to the elevation of the Bow Summit parking lot where our shuttled vehicle will be waiting for us.  Generally, the trip is concluded and convened at the local pubs like the Wood or the Grizzly Paw around Canmore.
