Mount Louis, Gmoser Route Grade III 5.8Quick description: Gmoser Route - Classic alpine rock climbing close to Banff |
Trip Description top of page Mt. Louis is a classic alpine rock climbing outing. The first ascent took place in 1964! Impressive indeed! This is a steep, sheer mountain with no walk-up routes either up or down making it very much a climber's peak. The rock is very good to outstanding for this region of the Rockies. Some of the rock could be characterized as immaculate. The difficulty is limited to one steep corner in the lower third of the route and vast majority of the climbing is quite tame at 5.5 - 5.7 roughly. This route is climbed in a day from the road and is a trip for intermediate to advanced experience levels. The approach is a 1.5 hour affair and an alpine start early in the morning is required to take advantage of the daylight hours (aka - by headlamp to start). The descent is technical, steep and has to be undertaken with great care. Not much fresh water on this outing so plenty of water has be brought to stay hydrated and sharp!
